The Next Chapter...

During their time together as a couple at Dickinson College, Aidan and Elena enjoyed exploring the local hiking trails, bonding over conversations and shared thermoses of Helena’s coffee as they traveled over portions of the Appalachian Trail.
Their love of the outdoors continued after Elena moved south to Virginia following graduation. Getting outdoors became an important part of their time together whenever Aidan would come down to visit during their two years of long-distance prior to his graduation.
When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down most in-person interactions, the couple took even more refuge in hiking trips with their beloved shelter dog, Penelope. As experienced hikers, they would tackle challenging trails, even camping out overnight in some cases.
On October 1, 2021, Elena and Aidan (and Penelope too) embarked on what would turn out to be the most important hike in their lives so far. Relishing the beautiful fall weather, the pair set off on the Beecher Ridge and Overall Run Loop, part of the Appalachian Trail. As the golden hour approached, they reached a beautiful overlook.
Aidan instructed Elena to pose on the rock outcropping with her back to the camera, encouraging her to throw her arms wide, making jokes to get her to laugh.
Penelope started to bark and dance around in excitement, causing Elena to turn around to see what was happening. When she did, she was greeted by the sight of Aidan on one knee, a ring box in his hand.
Aidan feels it important to include that the first words out of his beloved’s mouth were, “Shut up!” Elena feels it important to mention that he loves her “lack of a filter.” After the initial surprise, some tears, and some very heartfelt words, Elena officially said “Yes.”
The pair finished out their hike and weekend with an overnight camp, FaceTiming with family members upon their return home on Sunday evening. In light of the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and a desire to streamline their saving/budgetary process, the couple opted for a longer engagement.
